Ingrown toenails treatment

An ingrown toenail or onichocryptosis is a frequent problem. It is a painful condition of a toe usually or finger (rarely but may happen) when the edge of a nail plate begins to grow into a surrounding nail skin. Usually the external edge of a thumb nail grows in, although, an ingrown nail can be of both sides – external and internal. Nail begins to grow in the moment when the skin of a nail bed is perforated by a sharp edge of the nail. Then the foreign body irritates the skin and causes an inflammation opening the way to toes infection. An ingrown toenail weeps, surrounding skin becomes red, may swell and fester, patient feels a strong pain. Nail traumatizes even more when wearing narrow shoes, redness and swelling progress, the secondary infection may begin. In most severe cases an inflammation turns into a chronic one, granulation forms and the nail bed hypertrophies.

Main reasons causing an ingrown toenail to occur:
incorrect nail trimming (a sharp nail plate’s tip forms because of an incorrect nail trimming. The tip embeds into tissues and penetrates even deeper when growing);
tight footwear (the pressure to the nail plate when wearing a tight footwear);
various traumas (thumb contusion, jogging, kicking);
deformation of toes, age (nails use to bend with age, become thinner and it becomes difficult to take care of them).

Most probably everyone who encounters such a problem asks, how to properly treat ingrown toenails?
Ingrown toenails treatment depends on the toenails infringement level. Treatment is distinguished into a conservative and a surgical one. Orthonixia is assigned to a conservative kind of treatment (non-surgical ingrown nail treatment). Innovative ingrown nail correction methodics (orthonyxia) allow to adjust the nail plate aiming it to the right anatomic direction and avoid any surgical intervention! PODOFIX AND COMBIped non-surgical igrown nail treatment methods are applied in Laser dermatology center. These methods are created and broadly applicable in Germany for a few years already and from now on accessible for Lithuania’s patients.
After the procedure it is recommended to wear open shoes that do not restrict movements, a warm sock or slipper as the toe is bandaged after the surgery and may not fit into ordinary shoes.
It is also very important to have somebody who would take a patient home after the procedure as to drive by oneself may be pretty difficult because of toe’s numbness after a local anesthesia and the bandage.
If there is a possibility, patient should take walks as little as possible and hold the leg upraised – these are the perfect conditions for a wound to heal.
