Botulinum Toxin Injections (Botox)

Despite all our efforts to take care of our skin as well as stay young, wrinkles start appearing and that cannot be smoothed down with the help of any cream or mask.

If your friend suddenly starts looking a few years younger and tells you about a cucumber facial mask that has miraculous power - don’t believe it! A fast, efficient and safe way to outwit nature and restore youth without surgical intervention is Botox injections.

Botox (VISTABEL) – a preparation, which is produced by the US company Allergan, whose factory is based in Westport, Ireland.

The first observations of botulinum toxin as a preparation that relaxes muscles and, as a consequence, removes the painful spasms - date back to the 1950s. In 30 years botulinum toxin started to be used in ophthalmology for strabismus treatment. Then, for the first time a pleasant side effect was noted. Later, it was used to smooth wrinkles. In 1989 American company Allergan was the first who began producing botulinum toxin on an industrial scale. Since then it has been the main remedy for fighting against premature signs of skin aging.

Botulinum injections are performed on such facial areas where there is a greater risk of wrinkle appearance. Such places are usually vertical wrinkles between the eyes, horizontal forehead wrinkles and wrinkles on the outer corners of the eyes.

Wrinkles are not only the age feature, but also the signs of experienced emotions and stress. All the wrinkles are grouped into: mimic, structural and chrono-(or ageing) wrinkles.

Botulinum toxin can be considered the panacea for wrinkles, especially when it comes to mimic wrinkles. Their formation principle is simple: repeated muscle contractions cause contraction and stretch of the dermis with the subsequent wrinkling of the skin. Miorelaxing (relaxing) effect of botulinum toxin blocks this process. Unfortunately, structural (determined by the structural features of the face) and ageing wrinkles (appear because of the thinning of the dermal layer) are not subordinate to botulinum toxin. Botulinum toxin itself doesn’t have a rejuvenation effect on the skin.

The most frequently asked question by the patients is the following: "At what age should I begin using botulinum toxin?”

Basically, botulinum toxin can be used for cosmetic purposes at the age from 18 to 65. Generally, it is advisable to start using botulinum toxin injections when you are 30 as that time skin begins losing its elasticity and starts actively forming facial wrinkles. If you constantly wince, botulinum toxin injections can be used beginning at a younger age for prophylactic purposes.

Botulinum toxin and its safety - a topic that should be discussed separately. Some patients are afraid of this preparation because they believe that it is harmful to the body and even poisons it. It is also believed that botulinum toxin can cause nervous system disorders; however, it is not so. Botulinum is medication; primarily it was used for the treatment of neurological diseases. In addition, by means of this medicine many other diseases have successfully been treated, including childhood diseases.

Botulinum toxin injections don’t cause muscle atrophy as they temporarily block nerve receptors, which determine restrictions on motor activity. Botulinum toxin injections smooth wrinkles owing to permanent muscle relaxation.

Botulinum toxin injections

How the procedure is performed:
Botulinum toxin injection procedure starts from the consultation with a doctor. A physician determines if a procedure is possible to perform. After getting acquainted with all the possible side effects and outcomes of the procedure, a patient signs an agreement to undergo the procedure. The patient sits on the couch in Semi-Fowler's position (the head of the bed is raised 30 degrees). After cleaning the skin, the preparation is injected with a thin needle into the muscle or under the skin (it depends on the area of injection). On average, botulinum toxin injection procedure takes about 15 minutes. After the injection, ice is put on the skin for 10-15 minutes.

Botulinum toxin cannot cause severe pain. Many people equate botulinum toxin injections with mosquito bites. However, if you have a high pain threshold, you will have a local anesthesia: a special anesthetic cream will be spread on the area of injection.

Although injections can cause a feeling of slight discomfort, such as muscle heaviness, it quickly passes. Insensitivity to botulinum toxin is a very rare phenomenon. 0.1-2% of all people have it.

Generally, the effect of the botulinum toxin injection is noticeable on 2nd – 5th day after the injection. It reaches a maximum on 10th - 14th day and lasts for about 4-6 months. After this period botulinum toxin injections can be repeated.

Undoubtedly, like any other medicine, botulinum toxin has its contraindications:
- Myasthenia gravis;
- Blood coagulation disorders;
- Inflammatory and/or infectious processes in the areas of injection;
- A flare-up of common diseases;
- Use of preparations, such as antibiotics, anticoagulants, antiaggregants, relanium;
- Chronic obstructive lung diseases;
- The period of pregnancy and breast-feeding;
- Until 12 years of age.

Moreover, it is not advisable to inject botulinum toxin at the beginning of the menstrual cycle.

Do not forget about the precautions! The day before the botulinum toxin injections are given it is forbidden to drink alcohol because it may increase the risk of hematoma and bruising. A day after the procedure it is recommended not to lower your head for a long time. If the head is lowered for a long time, the blood flow in the facial area will be increased and the preparation can be distributed improperly. For this reason, it is advisable to refrain from massage during which you need to lie with your face down. Moreover, it is advisable to get rid of daily housework: ironing, vacuuming, washing floors are not recommended (because then the head is lowered).

After the procedure it is strictly forbidden to touch the places where the preparation was injected and massage them. It is necessary to be in an upright position for at least 4 hours as well as constantly tense your facial muscles during a day. For the next 10 days after the botulinum toxin injection was given, you must not drink any alcoholic beverages and must avoid overheating, i.e. attending hot tubs, steam baths and saunas.

Safety and side effects of the procedure
Botulinum toxin has been used around the world for more than 35 years; its safety has been confirmed by most of the health care organizations. The negative effect using botulinum toxin is possible only in cases when the procedure is carried out by laypersons. Dear women, remember that only doctors who have undergone special training have the right to inject the botulinum toxin.
All injection advantages disappear if an inexperienced doctor performs the procedure!

Botulinum toxin with other medicines
Many women often ask if it is possible to inject other wrinkle preparations together with botulinum toxin. Answer: Yes, it is possible. You can, for example, combine botulinum toxin injections with hyaluronic acid injections. However, it should be remembered that after botulinum toxin injections were administered, at least two weeks have to pass before you can start injecting hyaluronic acid injections.

Peeling can be performed only after 3rd week after botulinum toxin injections were given. If skin scrubbing (peeling) has already been carried out, you have to postpone the procedure of botulinum toxin injection and wait until the skin is completely renewed after scrubbing (peeling). Photorejuvenation can be combined along with botulinum toxin injections; nevertheless, it should be remembered that neurotoxin is excreted faster from the skin if the procedure of photorejuvenation is conducted.
