What is a platelet rich plasma – PRP?

PRP is a natural product that is produced out of patient’s own blood. A small amount of blood is taken from patient’s vein. First of all, it is put into a test-tube, then to a special centrifuge. White blood cells are separated from the white ones leaving only purified blood plasma with platelets. The amount of platelets in blood becomes four times bigger than usual. The prepared plasma is called a platelet rich plasma (PRP). No synthetic substitutes, additional materials are used, therefore the probability of side effects is reduced.
PRP has been used in medicine for a long time: orthopedics, dentistry, reconstructive surgery but a possitive impact in dermatology, cosmetology and wound healing has been noticed recently. PRP might be injected into the facial, neck, decolte, hand skin and hair area as well. Research has shown that PRP stimulates the collagen and elastin synthesis in the skin, suppresses lesions made by sun and skin aging, it is also effective for the treatment of hair loss.

How does PRP work?

Platelets – blood cells, participating in wound healing and stimulating the new cells formation. Injected PRP activates the synthesis of patient’s own collagen and elastin, promotes the regeneration of tissues. All these actions naturally rejuvenate the skin: the number of wrinkles is reduced, skin becomes more even, brighter and firmer.

What is the difference between PRP and other injections or fillers?

Fillers – a hyaluronic acid extracted in a synthetic way which may be injected into separate wrinkles, problematic areas – usually wrinkles on the forehead, around lips or into lips in order to increase their volume. Hyaluronic acid magnetizes water molecules in this way increasing volume and size - wrinkles become even and the volume of lips increases.
PRP stimulates synthesis of patient’s own collagen in the whole face skin and not only in some particular wrinkles. PRP can be injected into areas of face, neckline, hands, it improves the general skin condition as well – firms, evens the surface, color and may be used in such areas, which fillers and other injections cannot be applied in.
Fillers, injections of botulinum toxin, laser procedures can definitely be combined with PRP in order to ensure an optimum skin rejuvenating effect of every kind.

When is PRP applicable?

• in order to rejuvenate skin: wrinkles, lost firmness of skin, dull skin, color unevenness
• in order to stop the hair loss
• in order to stimulate wound healing
• in order to treat scars
• in order to treat skin pigmentation

How is the procedure of PRP prepared?

A small amount of blood is taken from patient‘s vein and put into a test-tube. The test-tube is centrifuged – particular blood components are distinguished, platelet rich plasma that is going to be injected into the skin is purified. Such a preparation contains a several times larger amount of platelets than usual. While PRP is being prepared, patient‘s face or another area which is going to be treated is prepared for the procedure as well. A local anesthesia (special cream) can be used, therefore the injections cause a minimal discomfort and are not painful. Multiple injections into the skin are done using a thin needle. Procedure takes about 30-60min. A temporary redness, swelling may follow after the procedure, bruises can occur as well but they usually disappear in 4-7 days. As PRP is produced out of patient‘s own blood, the rate of side effects decreases to a minimum.

How many PRP procedures are necessary?

The effect starts to be visible after 3-4 weeks and the regeneration process continues for a long time. Usually 2-3 PRP procedures are recommended with a 1-2 months break. It is recommended to repeat the procedure after 6-12 months.
PRP procedures can be combined with other rejuvenating procedures: botulinum toxin, fillers, laser procedures.

What are the side effects of PRP?

Swelling, redness, bruises, infection, the lack of effect.

When a procedure cannot be performed?

Procedure is not recommended for pregnant, breastfeeding women, patients with systemic connective tissue, autoimmune, oncology diseases, patients having coagulation disorders, prone to scarring, having an active infection on face (eg.: cold sores). It is decided whether the procedure can be applied during the consultation.

Skin care after the PRP procedure

The day of the procedure patient is not allowed to visit sauna, do sports actively, take alcohol. Patient should also avoid sun for at least two weeks after the procedure and use sun protection SPF50.
Finally, it is necessary for a patient to use a recommended moisturizing cream for 1-2 weeks after the procedure.
