Skin tumors

Skin tumors are divided into benign (non-malignant), malignant and pre-cancerous.

Benign skin tumors are very common. Perhaps it would be hard to find someone who does not have one or more benign skin tumors. These are moles, fibromas, keratosis, warts, keratoacanthoma, cysts, and other skin tumors. In rare cases benign skin tumors can be similar to those of malignant nature, that is why it is advisable to consult a dermatologist if there are any formations on the skin.

Malignant tumors of the skin are classified by origin into epithelial (basal cell carcinoma (BCC) as well as squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and melanocytic (melanoma). Epithelial tumors account for three-fourths of all skin malignancies, whereas melanoma – for one fourth. According to the data of the Lithuanian Cancer Registry, the incidence of tumors of epithelial origin has begun to grow rapidly since 1993. Early diagnosis of skin cancer leads to good recovery forecast. Skin tumor diagnosis is non-complex, painless and quickly performed. In 90% of the cases the treatment is performed in ambulatory conditions without hospitalization or anesthesia required.

Pre-cancerous skin lesions (such as actinic keratosis and atypical moles (the ones which deviate from the norm) occupy an intermediate position between benign and malignant skin diseases. Such diseases, depending on the origin of the patient's condition and other criteria, require treatment (removal) or careful observation.
